CALGARY – One person is dead after a single-vehicle crash closed down a portion of northbound lanes on Crowchild Trail in southwest Calgary.
EMS said the male driver, believed to be in his 20s, was killed in the crash; a woman in her 20s was partially ejected from the vehicle. She was taken to Foothills Medical Centre in life-threatening condition.
Police said it happened between 17 Avenue and 33 Avenue on Crowchild Trail at around 5 p.m. Friday.
Aerial footage from Global 1 showed a badly damaged vehicle that appeared to have crashed through a sound barrier along the busy roadway.
A couple living on the other side of the barrier describe the moment of impact.
“It was just like a big explosion. I almost thought… it almost sounded like a bomb going off. I was inside and it startled me and I came running out and the whole barrier was gone,” said Ellen Fraser, who lives along 28 Avenue near Crowchild Trail.
Traffic backups could be seen for kilometres as a result of the police investigation into the crash. Police said just before 6 p.m. three northbound lanes would be closed off with barricades, and to expect a closure from 17 Avenue to 33 Avenue for the next “few hours.”
Police are investigating whether speed or alcohol were factors, or whether the pair were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
