Quebec driver’s licence costs to go down thanks to safe driving

MONTREAL – The cost of a driver’s licence in Quebec is about to drop, thanks in large measure to safe driving.

The province’s Transport Minister Robert Poeti said about 4.2 million drivers will see a change in their billing statements totalling a savings of $56 a year.

“If you have no demerit points, [you will] save $65 per year,” said Anne-Catherine Couture, Poeti’s spokesperson, explaining that the $9 difference is an incentive for people to drive safer.

Most of the rationale for the drop is due to an overcapitalized insurance fund that has 16 per cent more money than it needs to meet the province’s current needs.

That occurred, Couture said, because the province’s drivers are safer than they have been in years past.

“Twenty-five per cent of the reason [for the price drop] is because SAAQ locations have modernized,” Couture explained.

She said the new price system will be in effect starting Jan. 1, 2016, and will run through to 2018.

After that, the program will be re-evaluated.
