A strong storm is approaching the B.C. coast and Environment Canada has issued some weather warnings for parts of the province.
Wind warnings have been issued for:
- Central Coast – coastal sections
- Cariboo
- East Vancouver Island
- Fraser Canyon
- Greater Victoria
- Haida Gwaii
- Howe Sound
- Metro Vancouver
- North Coast – coastal sections
- North Vancouver Island
- Prince George
- Southern Gulf Islands
- Sunshine Coast
- West Vancouver Island
Environment Canada says strong winds that may cause damage are expected Thursday. A cold front will sweep down across the South Coast on Thursday producing very strong winds, with some areas expected to see gusts up to 80 km/h in the morning.
The winds will diminish in the afternoon as the front moves to the south.
Damage to buildings, such as roof shingles and windows, may occur. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.
The incoming cold front will sweep across the Central Interior Thursday afternoon and then stall across the Southern Interior in the evening.
Environment Canada says strong winds with gusts over 80 km/h will develop across the Central Interior in the morning then spread to the Southwest Interior in the afternoon.
Heavy rain is expected to accompany the front, with snow falling at higher elevations.
The snow is likely to change to rain over most of the Kootenay regions Thursday afternoon.
The storm may linger over the far southern part of B.C. on Friday, in which case, potentially heavy precipitation would continue.
In preparation for the heavy rainfall and high winds, City of Vancouver crews are out clearing catch basins and sewer drains in problem areas. Residents are encouraged to do their part by clearing leaves and debris near catch basins and sewer drains in the neighbourhood to reduce the risk of flooding in homes, businesses, properties and public areas.
