TORONTO – The Toronto Zoo has euthanized a 25-year-old giraffe after weeks of failing health.
Twiga was born at the zoo in 1990, and was one of the oldest giraffes of her species in North America. The zoo recently marked her 25th birthday, but had also observed poor health and weight loss in recent weeks, according to a statement from the zoo.
She collapsed in her habitat Saturday and zoo veterinarians decided to euthanize her. A necropsy is planned at the University of Guelph.
“Twiga lived a very long life and provided staff, volunteers, members and visitors with many memorable moments over the years,” reads a statement from the zoo. “She was a great ambassador for her species and gave those fortunate enough to have had a close encounter with her a fantastic and sloppy experience.
“She will be thoroughly missed by everyone.”
Giraffes typically live to about 25 years of age in the wild, and can live longer in captivity.
Twiga birthed nine calves at the zoo, most recently in 2013.
