Flying beavers might sound like a ridiculous idea but it was actually an Idaho reality back in 1950.
The Idaho Historical Society and The Department of Fish and Game have released a long-lost documentary called Fur For The Future that details the state’s solution to overpopulation in some areas at the time.
The archived footage shows beavers rounded up and packed inside boxes attached to parachutes. Then, from thousands of feet up in the air, the beavers were launched out of the plane like a squad of paratroopers headed into battle.
The film had been lost for more than half a century before staff at Boise State Public Radio ignited a conversation about what happened near Payette Lake. A historian eventually tracked it down even though it had apparently been mislabeled and stored in the wrong file.
