WINNIPEG — The family of Taylor Renwick is grieving after she was killed by an alleged drunk driver Friday night.

“Taylor was a shooting star that burned bright but, unfortunately far too fast,” Danielle Lewis told Global News about her sister. ” Over the last couple of days, we have been blessed with many memories and kind words about Taylor by all those who knew her. For those who knew Taylor they knew her, Taylor was always herself and never changed, not for anyone.”

Renwick, 20, was on her way home for Thanksgiving to Napinka near Melita from Winnipeg when she was hit head-on on Highway 2, just two kilometres east of St. Claude.

The alleged drunk driver in the mini-van was being pursued by RCMP who say they had backed off before the collision because of excessive speeds and reckless driving.

RCMP had located the 27-year old man at Tallboys Petro gas station in St. Claude after reports of a impaired driver near Notre Dame.  When they approached the car the driver fled.

An employee at the gas station said they had filled up gas and paid for it when police pulled up behind the car with its lights flashing.  That’s when the driver and three passengers took off.

He said everyone is shaken by what happened.

The driver is in stable condition in hospital.  He was air lifted by STARS Air Ambulance and is in a Winnipeg hospital.  The other passengers also have non-life threatening injures.

Renwick’s family doesn’t blame police for pursuing the driver.

“We encourage everyone to live like Taylor. Love each other, be thankful for the people in your lives, love everything deeply and without waiver, be kind, live life to the fullest, always eat dessert, strive to be your best, never be afraid to sing and dance it out, and always be yourself,” said Danielle Lewis.

The Independent Investigations Unit of Manitoba is helping in the investigation.
