FREDERICTON – A series of public consultations concerning the future of NB Power’s Mactaquac Dam will begin on Tuesday.
The dam was commissioned in 1968 and is expected to reach the end of its service life in 2030 due to expansion problems with its concrete structures.
NB Power has identified three options for the dam, all of which could cost between $2 billion and $5 billion.
Those include repowering the generating station with a new powerhouse and spillway, retaining the headpond with no power generation, and restoring the Saint John River to its natural state.
Tuesday’s meeting will be held from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Riverside Resort in French Village, with others to be held in Nackawic, Fredericton and Woodstock over the next week and a half.
The Mactaquac generating station produces energy using the flow of water from the Saint John River and supplies about 12 per cent of New Brunswick’s electricity.
The utility will have to choose a preferred option for the dam by next fall in order to complete the work by 2030.
