Manitoba Bisons win big in big house

WINNIPEG — The Manitoba Bisons made university soccer history as the women’s team recorded the first CIS victory in a World Cup stadium. The Bisons defeated the cross town rival Winnipeg Wesmen 2-0 on Friday night at Investors Group Field.

“A dream come true” Bisons head coach Vanessa Martinez Lagunas said in a media release. “We had a lot of emotions and to see all the people that came to support the girls, to see them play, that was fantastic. We loved the experience and it was a big honour.”

Chelsea Dubiel and Sara Schur scored goals for Manitoba as they improved to 5-2-2 on the season. Manitoba moves into soul possession of first place in the Canada West’s East Division. Winnipeg falls to 1-7-1, dead last in the division.

The Bisons have never lost to the Wesmen racking up four wins in all four of their conference games over the last four seasons.  The rematch is scheduled for Saturday night in part one of the annual Duckworth Challenge.
