WINNIPEG — Some residents in River Heights are beyond frustrated after another string of crimes overnight on Tuesday.

16 garages were vandalized with graffiti and at least two vehicles were tagged in the back lanes of Ash Street and Oak Street near Grant Avenue.

Barb, a resident on Ash Street said she was woken up at two in the morning.

“I woke up and heard this really loud noise like an explosion,” said Barb, who didn’t want her last name used.

She looked outside and saw flames four feet high behind her vehicle in the back lane.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Barb says someone had broken into her garage, stole her gas can, poured the gas in the back lane and lit it on fire. She called police. When they arrived they realized the culprits had done much more.

“The messages are meaningless to a lot of people,” Norma Currie said. “It’s just a destruction of property for no reason at all.”

But residents won’t have to rush out and paint over the graffiti or make an Autopac claim. Police are handing out graffiti wipes to affected homeowners or they can pick them up at their local police station at no cost. The wipes remove the graffiti and don’t damage your paint.

“Wow, beautiful, look at that guys,” Roxy said, using the wipes on her car, “Not affecting the paint at all.”
