Victims of Oregon mass shooting identified

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of the nine victims who lost their lives Thursday in a tragic mass shooting at an Oregon community college.

The victims have been identified as Rebecka Ann Carnes, 18, of Myrtle Creek, Treven Taylor Anspach, 20, of Sutherlin, Sarena Dawn Moore, 44, of Myrtle Creek, Jason Dale Johnson,33, of Winston, Lucas Eibel 18, of Roseburg, Kim Saltmarsh Dietz, 59, of Roseburg, Quinn Glen Cooper, 18, of Roseburg, Lucero Alcaraz, 19 of Roseburg.

The ninth victim was 67-year-old Lawrence Levine. Levine was an assistant professor in the school’s English department, and it was in his class that the shootings took place.

Police released a statement on behalf of the family of one of the victims, Lucas Eibel. In the statement the family said the “amazing” teen, who was studying chemistry at the college, loved animals and soccer.

They asked that any donations on behalf of Eibel be made to the victims of the shooting and the Roseburg High School’s Future Farmers of America student organization.

Quinn Cooper’s family said in a statement that he was funny and compassionate and loved dancing and voice acting.

A statement from Jason Johnson’s family says he was a Christian and recently enrolled in school.

Police also released photos of the victims at a press conference Friday.

On Thursday just after 10:30 a.m. local time, a lone gunman carrying multiple weapons entered Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore. and started shooting.

Chris Harper-Mercer, 26, has been identified as the gunman. He also died Thursday in a shootout with police. His motive for the deadly mass shooting has yet to be identified.

On Friday, President Barack Obama ordered all U.S. flags lowered to half-mast until sunset on Oct. 6 to honour the victims of the shooting.
