NDP demand Ontario premier ‘come clean’ on her role in Sudbury byelection scandal

TORONTO – Ontario’s New Democrats say Premier Kathleen Wynne must come clean about her role- if any – in the Sudbury byelection scandal that led to criminal charges against a senior Liberal operative.

OPP charged prominent Sudbury Liberal Gerry Lougheed on Thursday after an investigation into allegations he offered former candidate Andrew Olivier a job or appointment to step aside for a Feb. 5 byelection.

Wynne refused to answer questions about whether she had told Lougheed to make the job offer, insisting she couldn’t comment because the case is now before the courts.

But NDP house leader Gilles Bisson says all Wynne has to do is say “No.”

Bisson says if Wynne didn’t order Lougheed to make the job offer she should say so, and he doesn’t see how the courts have anything to do with her ability to deny she had anything to do with it.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says it shouldn’t take the courts for the premier to explain whether she or anyone in her office gave Lougheed his marching orders.
