TORONTO — Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Toronto and the GTA as temperatures are set to spike in many areas of the province.

Starting Saturday, temperatures are set to max out at 30 C until the end of the Labour Day long weekend on Monday. Humidex values will also reach close to 40 C.

Officials say the heat won’t let up much at night either, with temperatures expected to sit around the low 20s.

While the heat may just cause discomfort for some, it could put older adults, infants and young children at a greater risk of heat illnesses and health concerns.

People with chronic illnesses — such as breathing difficulties, heart conditions or psychiatric illnesses, or those without access to air conditioning, homeless people and people who work or exercise in the heat — are at greatest risk in hot temperatures.

Symptoms of heat illness include:

  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Rapid breathing and heartbeat
  • Extreme thirst
  • Decreased urination with unusually dark yellow urine

Officials say that if you experience any of these symptoms during extreme heat, immediately move to a cool place and drink liquids, preferably water.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

The areas affected by the heat warning include:

  • Burlington – Oakville
  • City of Hamilton
  • Halton Hills – Milton
  • Mississauga – Brampton
  • Niagara
