Police Chiefs launch road safety campaign

WINNIPEG — A new media campaign is aiming to save lives, especially on long weekends.

The Manitoba Association of Chiefs of Police is rolling out a series of commercials focusing on road safety issues starting Monday, September 7.

More than 12 police forces in the province came together for the campaign.

“People involved in the campaign were looking for a good way to let the Manitoba public know what it is we’re doing… and why that stop is so important,” said Insp. Joanne Keeping, head of RCMP traffic services in Manitoba.

Last year two people died on the roads during September long weekend and nine were injured.

Officers say distracted driving is still the main cause of crashes, followed by speeding.

“Distracted driving, not paying attention to the roads, conversations, eating, putting on makeup, that kind of thing, for sure that’s a very huge concern,” said Sgt. Rob Riffel of the Winnipeg Police Service.

Last year two people died on September long weekend and nine were injured, according to Keeping.

Every year 100 Manitobans die on the roads, often from preventable driving behaviours.

Extra police enforcement will be out all weekend and four 30 second campaign commercials will air throughout the year.
