WINNIPEG – A woman has been elected grand chief of the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak for the first time.
Sheila North Wilson, a former reporter and former spokeswoman for the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, was elected grand chief of the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak on Wednesday. The MKO advocates for 30 northern Manitoba First Nations.
Chiefs and councillors from the 30 bands elected North Wilson. Former grand chief David Harper was eliminated from the election on the first ballot. North Wilson needed a majority to win, and got 74 of the 132 votes on the second ballot, beating Tyler Duncan of Norway House and William Elvis Thomas of Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation.
