Catholic school board votes to expropriate 17 North York homes

TORONTO – More than a dozen townhomes in North York will be bought out by the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) and razed to make way for a new all girls school.

The board voted 6-4 Thursday evening to expropriate 17 residences in the Bayview Ave. complex near Cummer Ave. despite opposition from concerned homeowners.

The original plan called for the expropriation of 30 homes but that number was diminished as a compromise.

Each home is estimated to be purchased at a little less than $1 million.

The TCDSB claims its actions fall in line with the regulations of Ontario’s Expropriations Act.

“People are not being kicked out of their homes tomorrow. It’s going to be at least a year. So people can shop around in the mean time,” said TCDSB Chair Mike Del Grande following the vote Thursday evening.

“It’s not like we’re stealing their homes less than market value. If anything, it’s a little over market value. Moving costs are covered. Other expenses are covered.”

Residents have also expressed concerns about intensified traffic in the area suggesting the new building would more than double the enrolment levels.
