End in sight to Okanagan smoky skies

KELOWNA — Another smoky day over the Okanagan but the end is in sight.

Environment Canada has issued another special air quality statement for the entire Okanagan as smoke from wildfires — particularly the Stickpin fire in Washington State — continues to linger in the valley.

The statement says: “Southerly winds have continued to spread further north heavy plumes of smoke from the large wildfires burning in Washington state, resulting in high concentrations of fine particulates and poor air quality.”

Environment Canada says the smoke will continue until there’s a major shift in wind patterns and weather conditions.

That could happen Thursday when the weather is expected to change to clear skies with a high of 30.

The smoke is actually helping the effort in fighting wildfires by keeping temperatures cool.

The North Okanagan will get a bit of a break from the smoke today where the air quality index is expected to climb to seven out of 10.

However, the air quality for the Central and South Okanagan is expected remain high until the smoke clears later this week.
