York concourse creates snack shortage at Union station

WATCH ABOVE: After Monday’s closure of the Bay concourse, many travellers moving in and out of the newly renovated York concourse are frustrated with the lack of food and refreshments available.

TORONTO — The coffee supply has nearly run dry at Union Station.

The closure of the Bay Concourse — shuttered until 2017 for extensive renovations — leaves precious few retail spaces offering food and refreshment in Toronto’s commuter hub and the newly renovated York Concourse, which reopened Monday, isn’t offering any alternatives.

Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins says McCafe, Booster Juice and International News are confirmed vendors but won’t be open to the public for the next few months.

“They’re getting ready now,” Aikins said in an email.

“We have six spaces in York – McCafe, Booster Juice and International News have announced space already and others will follow shortly (the list is a great mix of local, independents and larger chains) and then there are lots of spaces the city has on the bottom level.”

Previously in the Bay concourse, a variety of food options were available to those travelling through the platform.

Aikins says food and refreshments are available close to the Union-Pearson Express.

“We have a Balzacs and Mill Street there and the Front Street Food Market is open till October 2,” she says. “We will have four coffee kiosks open in a few weeks as well in York.”
