WINNIPEG – Residents in one Winnipeg neighbourhood are so upset over the location of their new community mailboxes, they have taken their concerns straight to the crown corporation.

As of Monday, mail will start to be delivered to community boxes in many areas, including St. Vital.

However, residents who live on Brentford Road have said the new location poses a massive safety concern.

To get to the new mailboxes those residents will need to cross Meadowood Drive, which has heavy traffic and no crosswalk.

Those who live in the area told Canada Post it’s just a matter of time before there is an accident or someone is hit by a vehicle while trying to get their mail.

The concerns have been heard by the crown corporation and Canada Post has agreed to find a new site for the mailboxes.

“The discussions we had gave us good feedback in terms of safety of the site,” said Canada Post spokesperson Jon Hamilton.  “We told them that we would move the site and do some further study.”

Hamilton said it could take months to find a new location and to have the mailboxes moved.

“We have to find another location obviously that is safe, accessible and convenient for the people using it but we are going to be moving the site,” he told Global News.

Residents will use the mailboxes starting Monday until a new location can be chosen.
