Tinder unleashes lengthy Twitter rant in response to Vanity Fair article

Update (Aug. 13): In a statement to Wired magazine, Tinder stood by its tweet rant; however, a spokesperson admitted the company “overreacted.”

“We have a passionate team that truly believes in Tinder. While reading a recent Vanity Fair article about today’s dating culture, we were saddened to see that the article didn’t touch upon the positive experiences that the majority of our users encounter daily,” read the statement.

“Our intention was to highlight the many statistics and amazing stories that are sometimes left unpublished, and, in doing so, we overreacted.”

TORONTO – If its Twitter account is any indication, Tinder is not in a good mood.

On Tuesday night, the dating app’s official Twitter account sent out over 30 strongly-worded tweets calling out Vanity Fair for an article in its September issue titled “Tinder and the Dawn of the ‘Dating Apocalypse’.”

That’s right – over 30 tweets.

It seems Tinder had a big issue with the article, which looked at how dating apps and websites like Tinder are affecting young people’s dating lives. The article, which quotes many Tinder users, discusses the app’s so-called hookup culture.

“Sex has become so easy,” reads one of the quotes in the article. “I can go on my phone right now and no doubt I can find someone I can have sex with this evening, probably before midnight.”

Initially, the Twitter battle began when the author of the article, Nancy Jo Sales, tweeted a link to a survey alleging that 30 per cent of all Tinder users are married.

But Tinder wasn’t done – obviously unhappy with the messaging in Sales’ article, the dating app continued to send out a series of strongly-worded tweets directed at the writer.

Sales managed to get a few words in, but Tinder continued to send out tweets defending its platform.

The person behind the Tinder account pointed out that the article did not represent the other side of Tinder, which has brought many couples together.

The feud had many Twitter users entertained Tuesday, one user describing Tinder’s reaction as a “hormonal rage-fit.”

Despite many asking who was behind the now-infamous tweets, Tinder has not addressed the tweet-storm since.

There is some speculation that the Twitter feud may have been a PR stunt by the dating app. BuzzFeed reporter Claudia Koerner tweeted that she was tipped off in advance about Tinder’s so-called Twitter storm.

Global News contacted Tinder regarding its tweet storm; however, a request for comment was never returned.
