Residents rally against homeless camp in Maple Ridge

WATCH (above): Residents in a Maple Ridge neighbourhood say they’re fed up and want something done about the homeless tent city at their local park. They held a rally today, calling on the city to take action. Julia Foy hears from all sides — including those living at the park.

Up to 100 people gathered at Memorial Peace Park Saturday to protest what they say is a growing problem with the homeless in Maple Ridge.

Organizer Jenn Watts says residents are concerned about “homelessness and the recent rise in crime in our neighbourhood,” adding that “a lot of our parks and streets have been overrun with used needles.”

Protesters marched through the centre of town, passing by a tent city that has been growing in a wooded area behind the Salvation Army on Cliff Drive, just steps away from a residential area.

Rally organizers want City Hall to move the camp.

“I think last weekend there were six [drug overdoses] there,” said Watts. “There’s been numerous deaths from the ODs there…all sorts of stuff that people who live in a residential neighbourhood shouldn’t be subjected to.”

The tent city has been an ongoing issue in Maple Ridge. In June, a proposed barbecue at the camp was cancelled after an outcry from local residents.
