Saskatchewan’s last wildfire evacuees returning home

LAC LA RONGE, Sask. – The last of Saskatchewan’s wildfire evacuees have been given the all-clear to head home. Evacuation orders were lifted Wednesday morning for the communities of Hall Lake and Clam Lake Bridge.

The two were the only remaining northern Saskatchewan communities that were still under an evacuation order.

Tammy Cook-Searson, chief of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, said an overnight rain storm helped wildfire crews in the area. Most of the evacuees were expected to be home Wednesday night.

About 600 people live in the area.

Over 50 communities were evacuated over the last month because of the wildfires, forcing about 13,000 out of their homes.

There were 88 wildfires burning in Saskatchewan on Wednesday, bringing the total number of fires this year to 652. Last year at this time, there had been 235 wildfires in the province.
