Police arrest suspect after chase; truck rammed 5 cruisers

WINNIPEG – Police have arrested a man suspected of ramming into five Winnipeg police cars after a chase down the Trans-Canada Highway Monday.

The chase ended peacefully just west of Portage la Prairie around 1:30 p.m.

Police followed a B-R Transfer five-tonne truck west on Highway 1.

Bill Murray, who owns B-R Transfer, said one of his employees was driving and is the suspect.

Murray said Monday morning he got a call from 24-year-old Wayne Rennie, who had just gotten a ticket for using his cellphone while driving.

“He didn’t sound upset,” Murray said, adding he told his employee it was fine.

Murray then found out through a Global News tweet that his company vehicle had rammed police vehicles outside the Public Safety Building, he said.

Murray told Global News he then started talking to Rennie on a company two-way radio while he was driving down the Trans-Canada.

“He said he doesn’t want to hurt anybody but doesn’t care what happens to him,” said Murray.
