EDMONTON — It may have been a rainy start to K-Days on Friday, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of those in attendance. And, the weather quickly improved.

Some Edmontonians decided to check out the food and rides offered on the Northlands grounds right after the parade wrapped up.

Jennifer Arndt, a mother of two, brought her kids to the grounds Friday afternoon.

“We always go on the first day every year because we find that there are no lines to deal with and it’s just the best day to go,” she said.

Arndt’s favourite parts of K-Days are the rides and greasy food. Deep-fried Oreos are at the top of her list and she hopes to try the “weirdly” shaped ice-cream cone and red velvet doughnuts as well.

So far, the rides getting the most love are the Zipper and the Fireball. Take note: there are height restrictions for some of the rides.

Guests can look forward to two classics returning to the event this year: President’s Choice Super Dogs and the Monster Burger.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“It’s something people have been asking for,” said Jennifer Sheehan, public relations manager with Northlands. “It hasn’t been since 2009 that President’s Choice Super Dogs have been on site. This year, their theme is ‘Hollywoof.’ That’s taking place in Hall D. We’re really excited to have that group back on the grounds.”

“We’re also bringing back the Monster Burger,” said Sheehan. “This is something that’s really unique. It takes place in the kiosk in the Edmonton Expo Centre.

“It’s $65 and for that you get a kilogram of beef, half a kilo of cheese. The great thing about the Monster Burger is that for every one that’s purchased, Northlands will donate a kilogram of beef to the Edmonton Food Bank, so you’re feeding more than one family – you’re feeding your family and another one as well.”

Sheehan said there’s fun to be had – rain or shine.

“What’s really great about K-Days is that, while the midway really does cater to really nice weather, we also have the Edmonton Expo Centre. And that’s 520,000 square-feet and it’s eight halls filled with fun. There’s the shop zone, there’s the pavilion, there’s great shows, and lots happening inside as well, so even if you’re planning to come down and the weather isn’t 100 per cent fantastic, there’s still lots to do.”
