UPDATE: Pilot in critical condition after single-engine plane crashes outside Osoyoos

OSOYOOS – A pilot suffered extensive burns after a single-engine plane crashed on Highway 97 near Osoyoos Tuesday afternoon.

It happened around 5 p.m., about a kilometre north of a gas station.

Bill Yearwood of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada said the Beechcraft Bonanza was travelling from Oliver to Boundary Bay when it lost power, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing.

A witness tells Global News the plane clipped a semi on the roof as it tried to land and exploded after missing their house by about 30 metres. Osoyoos RCMP say the plane hit the ground and slid hard into a telephone pole before bursting into flames.

The pilot, a 46-year-old man from Surrey, was airlifted to hospital. He suffered extensive burns to the majority of his body, but was able to extricate himself from the wreckage.
