Road conditions spur complaints in Summerland

SUMMERLAND — Garnet Valley Road in Summerland is plagued by potholes and patches meant to fix those potholes. Letitia Whitaker lives on that road and calls it dangerous to drive on.

“It’s treacherous. It makes me nervous every time I drive home,” she says. “In order to advert the potholes on the road, [people] drive on the opposite side of the road. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve almost had a head-on collision with [my baby] in the backseat.”

Director of Works and Utilities Don Darling says Garnet Valley is the road that receives the  most complaints.

Darling says not much can be done until Summerland receives funding from the provincial and federal governments because Garnet Valley Road is anticipated to get torn up and fixed as part of a larger project to upgrade the water system.

The District is proposing to separate irrigation from domestic water. This will provide residents with filtered water from the treatment plant.

“[The road] does need to be upgraded but there is no use to upgrade it before the water separation because the road is basically going to be taken right out to put the water lines in,” explains Darling.

The water service and road improvements are estimated at $6.2 million. Summerland taxpayers will foot a third of the bill while the rest will come from government grants.

The B.C. government will announce which municipalities will receive money from the Small Communities Fund over the next couple of months.
