TORONTO — Grimm’s Fine Foods brand Home Style Roast Beef has been recalled due to possible listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The roast beef was sold in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Yukon, and may have been distributed in other provinces or territories. The product should be thrown out immediately or returned to the store where it was bought.

The product may have been sold at deli counters and not have a label or coding to identify the affected meat. The product, if still in its packaging, can be identified by the code G11630, BB 24 JUL 2015.

The meat may not look or smell off, but a health risk remains. Listeria can cause listeriosis, which can make people very sick and in severe cases even cause death. Symptoms include vomiting, nausea, muscle aches and neck stiffness.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada pregnant women, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk than others. The bacteria can also affect a woman’s unborn child, even if her symptoms seem mild. Premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth can occur.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with this product’s consumption. The recall was prompted by inspection activities by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and the agency is working to see that the product is removed from shelves.
