Federal government invests in Jasper National Park

WATCH ABOVE: Jasper is the largest of the Rocky Mountain National Parks and it’s receiving a $210-million boost from the federal government. Lisa Wolansky has the details.

EDMONTON — The federal government announced a $210-million investment in Jasper National Park Thursday.

The money will include work on Highway 16 and the Icefields Parkway, which connects Jasper and Banff National Parks.

It will also go towards other projects:

  • Revitalizing Jasper’s campgrounds;
  • Renovating heritage buildings;
  • Upgrading the Valley of the Five Lakes trail and parking lot;
  • Contributing to Species at Risk recovery through southern mountain caribou and Whitebark pine conservation;
  • Improving the long-term integrity and safety of infrastructure, such as the nine bridges on Highway 16.

The federal government is also investing $500 million in highway infrastructure at parks including Banff and Jasper National Parks.

According to the government, through the National Conservation Plan, Parks Canada’s investment in conservation projects contributes to the conservation of the country’s lands and water, restoration of ecosystems, and connecting Canadians to nature.

Jasper is the largest of the Rocky Mountain national parks and has two million visitors annually.
