De la Cathedrale road reopens after more than one year of work

WATCH: Final paving is happening on de la Cathedrale after more than a year of construction, but the Mayor wasn’t in the mood to talk about why works have taken so long. Global’s Tim Sargeant has more.

MONTREAL – The paving crews are out laying down the asphalt to eventually re-open rue de la Cathedrale between René-Lévesque Boulevard and de la Gauchitière.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The road could open as early as Friday according to the subcontractor hired for the paving.

”The road should be open. We’re going to finish the road today. I think they’re opening it maybe tomorrow. Just the road,” John Pasquale of Construction Bauval told Global News.

The road closed to traffic May 22, 2014 and hasn’t opened since.

It was also closed in the fall of 2013 for infrastructure work.

Ceveco was awarded the contract for more than $9 million and according to a city official, de la Cathedrale is scheduled to open this year. But some say it’s about time.

“At this point it would feel like a miracle that it’s finally happened,” Lawyer Harry Dikranian said from his office window overlooking road work.
