MONTREAL – Thundering drums marked the arrival of summer in Montreal Sunday afternoon, as revelers gathered at Place d’Armes for National Aboriginal People’s Day.

The celebrations started at 1 p.m. at the intersection of St. Jacques Street and St. Laurent Boulevard.

At 2 p.m. the group slowly made their way to Place d’Armes bearing giant effigies and marching to the beat of the drums.

Participants were treated to the lighting of the Solstice fire, a tobacco ceremony and an homage to Kondiaronk, a Huron chief who died in Montreal in 1701.

Ceremonial speeches were followed by drumming, singing and dancing much to the delight of the assembled crowd.
