Restaurants on Peel street furious over continued construction

MONTREAL – Restaurants along Peel street between Sainte-Catherine and de Maisonneuve streets are fuming over excavation work they say will dig heavily into their business.

It is the second time this spring the street has been closed due to roadwork.

Louie Mercuri, co-owner of Mexican restaurant Carlos & Pepe’s, said the city should have completed all the work in one shot.

The second wave of work will shore up the city’s underground pipes.

Merchants are being told it will last until November.

“It has to be done, the work is necessary,” said Jorge Ferreira, manager of the Vasco da Gama cafe.

Mercuri said Grand Prix weekend yielded spectacular results financially, but his spirits sank when the orange cones reappeared just a week later.

Despite complaints, Jacques-Alain Lavallée with Montreal Public Works, said the city has kept businesses in the area apprised of the situation.
