EDMONTON — An Canadian man has been arrested as a suspect in the homicide of an American woman on a small Caribbean island, according to police. Global News has learned the man is Omar Elkadry, a 27-year-old from Edmonton.
Police and prosecutors in Saba, an island belonging to the Netherlands, would only refer to the 27-year-old accused by the initials O.J.E.
They say both the man and woman were students at Saba University School of Medicine.
A 24-year-old woman was found dead in her apartment on April 15. An autopsy revealed she died of a homicide, but no details have been released on the cause of death.
The woman’s death is the first homicide on the island in 20 years. The island is home to 2000 people, of which 300 to 400 are students.
Elkadry is in his first year at Saba, and previously graduated from the University of Alberta’s Dental Hygiene program with distinctions for his leadership and professionalism. A classmate told Global News he was well-liked by everyone.
Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs said it’s “aware of the arrest of a Canadian citizen” and has been in contact with local authorities. Elkadry’s family declined to comment.
