Suspicious fire destroys two garages; damages two homes

REGINA – Fire crews have been busy battling garage fires over the weekend. Saturday, three garages were damaged in a blaze and Sunday, two more went up in smoke.

Around 3:30 p.m. Sunday fire crews were called to Lorne Street and 2nd Avenue North for reports of a garage on fire.

The first team to arrive on scene saw flames so intense they called back for support and upgraded the fire to a residential alarm.

Nobody was injured, but residents said the fire started in one garage, and spread quickly.

Two garages were totally destroyed and the siding on two homes has melted.

“The fire was fuelled by various car parts that were inside those garages, a couple of propane tanks that we’re venting, that really helped fuel the fire,” said deputy fire chief, Gerard Kay.

He added it could have been much worse: “We’re quite lucky. In fact, there was a slip tank of what appears to be gasoline or diesel inside one of the garages. But we managed to keep the fuel cool so it did not fuel the fire anymore.”

An investigator is working to determine the cause, but Kay said the scene is considered suspicious.

While there have been a number of garage fires this weekend, investigators do not believed they are connected.
