A man is in custody after someone threw a smoke grenade into Vancouver Police headquarters Saturday morning.

Police say a 28-year-old man tossed a smoke grenade into the lobby of VPD headquarters at 2120 Cambie St. at around 11:30 a.m. The suspect, who is known to police, was quickly taken into custody.

No one was injured, but the device caused minor damage. The building was evacuated and the area was cleared by a hazmat team before it reopened.

Police will be recommending several charges, including mischief, assaulting a police officer, and administering a noxious substance.
