Crash in Kelowna claims life of young woman

UPDATE: The B.C. Coroner’s service has identified the victim in a fatal head-on collision on Friday night. She was 21-year-old Joselyn Casavant of Kelowna. The victim’s family has been notified of her death.

KELOWNA –A 21-year-old Kelowna woman has died following a head-on collision on Friday night.

The accident involving two vehicles happened around 10 p.m. on the corner of McCurdy Road East and Morrison Road.

Witnesses say a blue Honda Coupe was speeding and lost control as it rounded a curve in the westbound lane, according to authorities. It struck a green Toyota sedan, going east, knocking it off the road.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene and found the 27-year-old driver of the Honda suffering non-life threatening injuries to his back and neck. The woman, who was driving the Toyota, died at the scene of the accident, say police. Both drivers were the sole occupants of their vehicles and Kelowna-area residents.

Impaired driving is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

A devastated friend of the victim visited the crash site Saturday morning to mourn the loss of the victim.

“I didn’t realize the tire marks left the road and went onto the grass beside it,” the victim’s friend told Global News.

Neighbors told Global News they heard a loud screeching sound and when they went outside to see what had happened following the incident Friday night, the scene was horrific. They say though it’s tragic what happened, they are not surprised because speeding on McCurdy Road has been the cause of concern for them for quite some time.
