Nine days ahead of the voting deadline for Metro Vancouver’s transit plebiscite, nearly 42 per cent of voting ballots have been screened by Elections BC.
The number has increased by just a few per cent points compared to last week’s count when under 40 per cent of all registered ballots was screened.
Voters have until May 29 to return their voting packages.
To date, the only municipality with more than 50 per cent (52.1 per cent) of ballots already screened is the village of Belcarra.
The lowest percentage of ballots screened so far is in Surrey (37.4 per cent), Langley (39 per cent) and Metro Vancouver Electoral Area “A” (36 per cent).
The ballot gives more than 1.5 million eligible voters the option of paying 0.5 per cent sales tax in exchange for an upgraded rapid transit system, hundreds more buses, additional ferries and a new bridge.
Voting packages were mailed out between March 16 and 27 to each registered voter in Metro Vancouver.
May 15 was the last day you could ask Elections BC for a voting package.
Counting and reporting of voting results is expected to last a number of weeks.
