High-Definition operating rooms open at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG — Four new, high tech operating rooms at the Health Sciences Centre officially opened Wednesday.

The ORs are equipped with HD cameras and monitor systems that will give medical staff in the operating room or elsewhere in the hospital a close up view of what’s happening during the surgery.

The $1 million dollar installation includes a monitor connected to a designated classroom at the HSC that will stream real time from the operation room.

“With these upgrades, we can provide an even better experience for our patients, improve training for health care providers and showcase the skills and talents of our surgical teams safely to other professionals,” Dr. Perry Gray, HSC’s Vice-President and Chief Medical Officer said in a news release Wednesday morning.

The cost of the new operating rooms was covered by four major donations to the Health Sciences Centre Foundation. The donors are: the Riley Family; James W. Burns;  Brian and Ruth Hastings on behalf of Qualico; and Paul Challoner.
