RIO DE JANEIRO – The Brazilian confederation of gymnastics is investigating remarks made by members of the men’s team toward a black teammate seen in a video that surfaced last week.

The gymnasts were seen telling fellow athlete Angelo Assumpcao that a smartphone’s screen is white when it works and black when it doesn’t; that supermarkets’ bags are white and trash bags black. Newspaper OGlobo put out the video, saying it was shared through a messaging app by gymnast Arthur Nory, who also appears in it.

The sport’s governing body head Klayler Mourthe said Saturday that he is gathering more information to decide what measures to take.

The minister of racial equality Giovanni Harvey told Globo TV network that he is following the case to see if there’s space for a criminal complaint.
