Portage Terriers have opponents seeing double

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE — One is a physical, power forward. The other is a smart, skilled goal scorer.

The Bowles brothers have completely different styles on the ice. But off, it’s hard to tell them apart.

“They look pretty similar,” said Portage Terriers head coach and general manager Blake Spiller. “They act pretty similar.”

Shawn and Brad are identical twins – teammates since birth.

“Playing minor hockey together our whole lives, it’s been fun doing it with him,” said Shawn.

The Elkhorn products are just wrapping up their second season with the Terriers. They’re each others top fans but also top critics.

“We’re pretty hard on each other,” said Shawn. “We let each other know when we do something wrong. That’s what makes us successful.”

Both boys finished in the top five in MJHL scoring this year and averaged 1.2 points per game.

“We got put together at the half way mark of the season,” said Brad. “Something clicked.”

Call it twintuition.

“I’ll just make a little pass through my legs and somehow he’s there,” said Brad. “I don’t know how that happens.”

But the Bowles aren’t just double the trouble for their opponents.

“A couple times we mixed up our jerseys and wore different ones,” said Brad. “I wore Shawn’s.”

Twin tricks their team is catching on to.

“One of them wears a Calgary Flames hat so that usually helps me out,” said Spiller. “But if they change stuff around, they might have me.”

The brothers though, have each other.

“He helps me out a lot,” said Shawn. “We help each other as much as we can.”

A constant source of sibling support.
