WINNIPEG – The fire that ripped through a vacant apartment building on Bannatyne Avenue considered part of Winnipeg’s rock and roll history is estimated to have done $2.4 million damage, a city official said Monday.

The blaze at 543 Bannatyne was first noticed by a passing police officer at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Fire crews were forced to leave the building and stand back as flames shot up through the roof.

Firefighters were still hosing down the remains of the building until Monday afternoon. A city spokesperson couldn’t say Monday whether the building will be demolished or if any of it can be saved. The historic block gained fame as the background image on the cover of the early 1970’s Guess Who album, So Long, Bannatyne.
