Wow Hospitality wins contract to run Winnipeg’s Esplanade Riel restaurant

WINNIPEG – City hall hopes the third time is the charm for a restaurant on the Esplanade Riel bridge.

A city hall committee on Thursday morning approved a Wow Hospitality bid to open a seasonal French restaurant called Mon Ami, Louis.

They plan to serve brunch, lunch and dinner from May 1 to Sept. 30. The space will be used for events during the rest of the year.

As part of the bid, Wow Hospitality will pay property taxes year round and give the city five per cent of its gross sales.

Chez Sophie announced earlier this year that it was closing its doors on the iconic bridge. Prior to that, the space was home to a Salisbury House.

The challenge for previous restaurants in that location was operating on a pedestrian bridge during the winter months, Coun. Brian Mayes said. He hopes allowing a seasonal operation will make the business plan more viable.

There were a total of eight bids.
