OTTAWA – Leaders from northern Saskatchewan are meeting with government officials in Ottawa this week. The group is looking to forge new partnerships and discuss a number of initiatives, according to a Cameco Corp. spokesman.

A total of 12 leaders from multiple communities in the region are in the nation’s capital for two days of meetings. The members include First Nation’s chiefs from English River, Black Lake, Hatchet Lake and Fond du Lac.

The trip was organized by Saskatoon-based uranium producer Cameco Corp. and is an unprecedented step in introducing leaders from Saskatchewan’s north to their counterparts in Ottawa, according to a company communications official.

“It’s going to be an exciting couple of days here in Ottawa and we hope it’s great dialogue between northern leaders [and] federal government officials,” said Jonathan Huntington, a Cameco communications manager.

“We think it’s a positive step along the path and we’ll see where it leads,” he added.

The Saskatchewan contingent is focusing on education and infrastructure initiatives during their discussions with members of parliament and other government officials, according to briefing notes provided to reporters. The group also includes officials from Cameco and other northern industries.

“The wide variety of meetings they have is just also excellent,” said Huntington.

“I am very excited to see how it all plays out in the end, but it’s been great to watch behind the scenes and now we get to see it unfold.”

The group spent all of Tuesday in meetings and is scheduled to do the same Wednesday.
