Ambulance-SUV crash in Quebec leaves one dead, several injured

SALABERRY-DE-VALLEYFIELD, Que. — One person is dead following a crash between an ambulance and an SUV southwest of Montreal that left several other people badly injured.

Quebec provincial police said one of three people in the SUV suffered critical injuries in the crash late Tuesday in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield (on Route 132) and later died in hospital.

Two other people in the SUV and two paramedics in the ambulance suffered serious injuries.

Police said the ambulance was not transporting a patient at the time of the crash.

A fire broke out at the front of the SUV following the accident and the Jaws of Life had to be used to extricate the people inside.

Police said the ambulance was responding to an emergency call at the time but could not say if the lights and siren were activated.
