Suspicious fire in North Central displaces families

REGINA – Fire ravaged two North Central homes late Friday night, displacing 12 people from their homes.

While nobody was injured, fire investigators are working with the Regina Police Service, as they believe the blaze is suspicious.

The blaze started in a home at 1110 Rae Street just before 10:30 p.m. and quickly spread to the home next door.

Neighbours were woken by sirens to see flames leaping from the windows.

The homeowners were too distraught to speak to media, but an extended family member told Global News that 11 people lived in the home where the blaze broke out, including several small children.

“It’s so scary because they were minutes away from dying,” said the victim’s sister-in-law, Tammie Lagimodiere. “If it would have been an hour later, they all would have been in bed and they would have perished.”

Lagimodiere is now collecting donations for her displaced relatives.

Regina’s deputy fire chief, Gerard Kay, said the family was able to escape without injuries.

Neighbours housed the displaced residents until Regina’s Mobile Crisis Service arrived to help them find temporary accommodations.

Nobody was in the home next door at the time of the blaze, but the owner returned home Saturday afternoon and was concerned about her cats.

The fire presented challenges for firefighters, as it spread into the insulation between the walls.

At this point, officials don’t know how the fire started, but they will conduct an investigation Monday.
