EDMONTON — Edmonton police and RCMP are stepping up efforts to catch unsafe driving habits

Edmonton police, RCMP and Provincial Commercial Vehicle Enforcement will be conducting laser and photo radar, as well as commercial vehicle inspections, at several high traffic locations throughout the Edmonton-area during a one-day blitz on Friday.

“Altering driver behavior is something that obviously doesn’t occur overnight,” said EPS Sgt. Steve Levesque.

“EPS and its law enforcement partners are going to continue to hammer home the message of responsible driving with similar initiatives throughout the spring and summer months.”

Speeding, distracted driving and impaired driving are the largest areas of concern for police.

Safety inspectors will be checking commercial vehicles over 4,500 kg for faulty equipment, oversize loads, dangerous or stolen good, load securement and the condition of drivers.

Friday’s initiative is also aimed at showcasing a joint effort to improve driving safety in and around Edmonton.

“We work collaboratively. We work together. Our whole goal is to deliver policing services in a seamless fashion in order to ensure safer community, safer highways, safer work sites, and places to live for both our communities,” explained Insp. Gary Graham, Stony Plain/Spruce Grove RCMP.

RCMP in St. Albert, Stony Plain and Spruce Grove are joining Edmonton police and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement.
