WATCH: Abandoned puppy found suffering from deliberate amputation

Basil, a young pit bull mix, has been through quite a lot for his young age.

At only 13 weeks old, he was found abandoned with only three legs. Doctors say the wound looked like a deliberate amputation.

Basil, his parents and his brother Braxton were found this weekend in an abandoned Texas home by the neighbours of Cindy Fitzgerald, president of the Houston non-profit Adopt A Rescued Friend.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Fitzgerald took the puppy to Abbotts Veterinary Clinic where doctors performed a full amputation on his injured leg.

A funding page set up by AARF to help cover the vet bills says Basil is recovering very well from the surgery and is wagging his tail.

“He needs to learn to balance and we need to build up all that muscle to make him strong,” says one update. “A few weeks in foster care with physical and behavioral training and he will be ready for adoption!”

Authorities do not know who was behind the abuse or why they hurt Basil, but the volunteers at AARF are thankful that his future seems bright.

“It only gets better from here,” they write. “He will be ready for the rest of his life to start!”
