Moncton residents prepare for spring flooding

MONCTON – Moncton residents are watching for flooding caused by melting snow.

Water is starting to pool on some streets and properties as the huge volume of snow that fell this past winter starts to melt.

Moncton Public Works says there are no widespread problems yet, but Moncton’s Angela Fushtey and her family are worried the creek behind their home in Westbrook Circle may overflow.

“There’s still quite a bit of snow left to melt.” she said. “We have a sump pump and we have a little bit of water on really warm days or rainy days that’s been coming through but nothing that’s actually substantial.”

Just down the street Edgar Poirier says as the snow melts and the creek rises, so does his anxiety.

“If it stays warm a couple two or three days there could be lots of that stuff around there.”

By stuff he means flood waters. Poirier’s neighbourhood was severely flood right around this time last year. Neither he nor his neighbour Derek Saulnier want to see a repeat of that this spring.

“I am just worried that there is gona be something that is gona back up definitely.”

He says it has been hard to bask in the spring sunshine – while he watches the creek rushing near his home.

“I just got my basement redone and finished off maybe three weeks ago and I am worried about it having the same effect.”

But Mayhew Lloy with the City of Moncton’s Public Works says so far there’s only been some isolated flooding around Greater Moncton

“The snow melt can cause problems. Last spring we had some snow melt but it’s usually the immense amount of rain that we get with the snow melt that creates the issues.”
