Jets fans flocking to California for playoffs

WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Jets final game, their return to Manitoba and now their playoff push.

Derrick Wiebe plans to have witnessed them all in person.

“We’re hoping there’s going to be a lot of white jerseys (in Anaheim) to show the rest of North America who the best hockey fans in the world are,” said Wiebe.

The Winnipegger is heading to California with three friends to watch the Jets first playoff game since 1996.

“This could be it for me,” said Wiebe. “I don’t have season tickets so it was a no brainer for me. I wanted to see a game.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Tickets for Thursday’s series opener in Anaheim are going for as low as $40 online. It’s a far cry from the $107 starting price for games three and four at MTS Centre with the 1000 tickets available each night expected to be snapped up in seconds. But add flights and the bill starts to soar.

“You could actually get something for around $700 if you’re willing to do one or two connections,” said Deb Peters, a senior travel consultant with CAA Manitoba.

A cost Wiebe says is worth it

“Certainly for the hockey, the weather didn’t hurt though,” said Wiebe. “All in all it’s going to be about a $2500 trip.”

For players, having their fans in the stands is priceless.

“It definitely makes it easier coming out to a tough road game when you have fans to support us there,” said Jets forward Bryan Little.

“Never ceases to amaze us in terms of the support we get,” said Jets captain Andrew Ladd. “We realize that’s a bonus for us.”

A little extra ammo to take down the Ducks.
