Republican Senator Rand Paul running for president

WATCH ABOVE: Susan McGinnis reports from Washington on Rand Paul’s prospects amid what’s expected to be a very crowded field.

Rand Paul has announced he will run for president.

On his website Tuesday morning, the 51-year-old Republican Senator from Kentucky said he is running “to return our country to the principles of liberty and limited government.”

He later made public announcement about his presidential campaign at a rally, dubbed “Stand With Rand,” in Louisville.

A donation ticker on his website has been steadily flipping, raising nearly $100,000 between when the site went live and about 12:30 p.m. ET.

Texas-born Paul, who was elected to the Senate in 2010, joins outspoken Calgary-born Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in the race for the GOP nomination.

His 79-year-old father Ron, a former Texas Congressman, tried to win the Republican nomination in 2008 and 2012, but lost out to John McCain and Mitt Romney during the respective primaries. He was also the Libertarian nominee for President in 1988.

Also expected to join the race for the Republican nomination is former Florida governor Jeb Bush – the son of former President George H.W. Bush and younger brother of former President George. W. Bush.

Paul’s announcement comes as rumours swirl in U.S. media that presumed Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton is set to formally announce she’ll throw her hat in the presidential ring once again. Clinton lost out on her 2008 bid to President Barack Obama.

The next presidential election is set for Nov. 8, 2016
