Sask. man sentenced to six years for killing three-year-old boy

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. – Nearly two years after a young boy was killed on Montreal Lake Cree Nation, the man responsible has been sentenced. Martin Abel Victor Bird, 30, received a six-year sentence Thursday for manslaughter in the death of the three year old.

The boy was in cardiac arrest when he arrived at the William Charles Health Centre on April 7, 2013, and died an hour later.

During court proceedings Thursday morning at the Court of Queen’s Bench in Prince Albert, Bird entered a guilty plea to a manslaughter charge.

Bird was given credit for 34 months of time served, leaving three years and two months in his sentence at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary.

Bird is prohibited from using guns for 10 years.

The RCMP has withheld the relationship between Bird and the boy to prevent the boy’s identification.
