Winnipeg cabbie finds boy, 3, wandering street in early morning

WINNIPEG – A local cab driver is being called a hero. Muhammad Azam was ending a 12 hour shift on Thursday morning when he saw a little boy wandering the streets alone, wearing nothing but a diaper around 4 a.m.

“He was back and forth walking beside a tree,” said Azam, who just started working for Duffy’s Taxi a few weeks ago. Azam spotted the boy as he was driving in East Kildonan in the area of Gateway Road and Antrim Road. He immediately stopped the car and looked around to see if a parent was anywhere in sight, but there wasn’t. At this point the child was visibly freezing.

“He was totally shaking, his body was shaking and shivering,” said Azam. “When I hold him in my arms he was too cold, that’s why I took him into the cab.”

Azam said he blasted the heat in his cab and called the police. Winnipeg police brought the boy back to safety.

“No charges are pending on that incident and we’re very happy the child is okay,” said Const. Chris Wingfield of the Winnipeg police.

The incident is a reminder to parents to make sure their doors are locked before going to bed. There is still no confirmation on how the child got out of the house. Azam hasn’t met the boy’s parents, but has this message for them.

“Very strong and brave child, I would like to tell this to his parents, that he’s very brave and strong,” said Azam.
